Keynote Speaker: Nathan Siebenga

Serving in a leadership role in todays’ schools requires a broad and intense commitment to boldness for the benefit of our students. In our personal and professional lives we are called to create dreams and lead teams with exertion. How often does that leave you feeling terrified? Join Nathan Siebenga for a dynamic session that builds upon ideas pulled from Tony Wagner’s 2015 book “Most Likely to Succeed: Preparing Our Kids for the Innovation Era”.

Mr. Siebenga is the Principal of Hamilton District Christian School (HDCH) in Ontario. In his current capacity he leads HDCH toward the vision of helping students design, develop and deploy beautiful, purposeful work. Mr. Siebenga’s talk will follow a screening of the 2016 film of the same name. Join your colleagues in exploring this all too familiar space of being terrified and courageous in a Christian school setting and be prepared to share your own story too.

Those who know Nathan describe him as ‘Edupreneurial’; a visionary who executes and delivers. He wears his heart on his sleeve and clearly loves leadership. Nathan was born and raised in Bowmanville Ontario, as the fourth child in an education family. He grew up watching good schools become great. As it was then ‘school’ continues to be his life. Now as a Principal of Hamilton District Christian High School (HDCH), he seems to have become fully engaged in the family business. Nathan desires to see students design, develop and deploy beautiful, purposeful work and loves leading HDCH towards this vision. As a Principal, he is committed to making a difference in his small corner of the world so that the graduates of HDCH can have an enormous impact wherever they land. A number of years ago he married his best friend, and together they have fun raising their five children.

Fr. John B. Zwers Award

For over a decade, the MANS organization and it's membership have recognized the achievements of pastors who support faith-based schools. The Fr. John B. Zwers Award will be awarded to three Pastors at the MANS 2017 Administrators’ Conference.

Fr. Zwers, a founding member of the Michigan Association of Non-public Schools, served faithfully on the MANS Board of Trustees until his passing in 2004. He treasured the fellowship of the MANS Board and valued what was to be learned from other faith groups. Fr. Zwers' love for and dedication to faith-based schools was apparent as he offered help and advice with a warm and loving smile.

In 2005, the MANS Board decided to establish the Fr. John B. Zwers Award to honor the memory of this faithful servant and advocate. Three of these awards will be granted, one to a pastor from each of our constituency groups: Catholic, Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod, and Christian Schools International. We are asking you to nominate individuals who would be worthy of such an honor.

These awards will be presented during the Fr. John B. Zwers Award Dinner, the evening of October 11, 2017. They are invited to be our guests at the dinner and the 2017 Administrators' Conference, which runs October 11-13, 2017 at Mission Point Resort on Mackinac Island, MI. Each awardee is also invited to say a few words while accepting their award.

To submit a nomination, please give thought to a pastor who:

  • has a strong history of support for your faith-based schools;
  • is a vocal champion for faith-based schools;
  • has ongoing connections to your school community, its parents, teachers, and students;
  • has demonstrated support for your leadership in the school community.

To nominate an individual with these qualities, please submit a one-page letter of nomination on your school letterhead that includes:

  • statements regarding why the person should be considered;
  • contact information for your nominee so we can contact them if selected.

Deadline extended! Please mail the nomination letter by June 10, 2017 to:
Fr. John B. Zwers Award
510 S. Capitol Avenue
Lansing, MI 48933

Or you may email the nomination letter by May 31, 2017 to:

All nominations will be kept confidential. Only those selected will be notified of their acceptance. The honorees will be invited to join us for the award presentation at the 2017 Administrators' Conference at Mission Point Resort on Mackinac Island.

Please do not hesitate to call the MANS office if you have questions: 800-394-5949.
