MANS Events 2014
Over 100 MANS administrators participated in Public Policy Day on March 19th, taking back valuable information to their schools on issues impacting their work on a daily basis. The day began with a presentation by Ian Kennedy and Racheal Fox from Warner Norcross on Michigan State policy compliance audits involving employee criminal background checks. MVU’s Jamey Fitzpatrick finished out the morning with an in depth look at Section 21f of the State School Aid Act which expands digital learning options for all students in Michigan. Jamey discussed some of the particular nuances of the law and the impact on non-public schools.
State Superintendent Mike Flanagan joined us for lunch and gave an overview of some of the issues before the Michigan Department of Education. Superintendent Flanagan praised the work of faith-based schools and in particular noted the work that is done by our schools with those less fortunate.
The afternoon began with an overview of Michigan’s shared time law from MDE’s Brian Ciloski, an analyst in the Per Pupil Accounting Office. Mary Drew (AG) and Paul Stankewitz (MCC) discussed recent and future legislative initiatives. The day concluded with an outstanding presentation from the Dean of the University of Michigan’s Department of Education, Dr. Deborah Ball, on educator evaluations and her work as the Chair of the Michigan Council for Educator Effectiveness.
